Busyness vs. Choosing to Sit at the Feet of Jesus

Overview
Through the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38–42, this message reminds us that intimacy with Jesus comes before service and activity. God has not called us only to do things for Him, but first to be with Him, to listen, and to learn.
1. Inviting Jesus, but Getting Distracted
– Martha welcomed Jesus into her home but soon became distracted by many tasks.
– Many of us invite Jesus into our lives, yet slowly get caught up in our own plans, worries, and busyness.
2. Mary’s Choice: Sitting at His Feet
– Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His word.
– This was a deliberate choice—to learn, to listen, and to live as a disciple.
3. Worry vs. What Is Truly Necessary
– Jesus said, “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.”
– The issue is not serving, but misplaced priorities—when activity replaces intimacy.
4. Lord and Savior, Not Savior Only
– Jesus must not only be our Savior, but also our Lord.
– Calling Him Lord means giving Him authority to rule every area of our lives.
5. Fruitfulness Flows from His Presence
– Jesus did only what He saw the Father doing.
– When we spend time at Jesus’ feet, we become like Him and naturally bear good fruit.
6. Obedience Releases the Supernatural
– Mary poured out her costly perfume because she truly encountered Jesus.
– Peter obeyed Jesus’ word—“because You say so”—and experienced a miracle.
– Hearing + obedience leads to God’s power being revealed.
Conclusion
Jesus calls us to relationship before responsibility. Mary chose the better portion, and it will not be taken away from her. When we sit at the feet of Jesus, our lives are transformed—and through us, God transforms the world.
